GASTRONOMY OF THE NERETVA VALLEY

The gastronomy of the Neretva Valley reflects the harmony of the river, the sea and the fertile land, creating a cuisine that is as diverse as the landscape from which it originates.
The most important ingredients of this area include eel, frogs, mullet, homemade olive oil and the wealth of the Neretva fields such as tangerines, figs, pomegranates and various vegetables. These ingredients have given rise to traditional recipes that have been passed down for generations and make Neretva cuisine unique in Croatia.
The Neretva eel and frog stew, the most famous and appreciated dish of this region, takes center stage. It is prepared from freshly caught eels and frogs, with the addition of onions, garlic, tomatoes, bay leaves and wine vinegar, which gives it a distinctive sour note. A real Neretva eel stew must be spicy, because it is precisely the spiciness that emphasizes its character and richness of flavor. It is cooked without stirring, just by gently shaking the pot, and is served with polenta, which perfectly absorbs the thick, aromatic sauce. This dish is not only a gastronomic symbol, but also part of the identity of local fishermen and families who prepare it with special pride.
During the summer, many visitors enjoy fishermen’s evenings, events that combine tradition, music and authentic flavors. At these events, you can taste fresh fish, brudet, fritule and local wines in the picturesque atmosphere of Neretva villages.
A special pride of the region is the cake Južnjačko sunce from the Fra Andrija Kačić Miošić High School, declared the best dessert in the Neretva Valley, which combines citrus fruits, almonds and Mediterranean aromas.
Neretva cuisine combines simplicity and the richness of nature into an unforgettable experience. In a combination of tradition, fresh ingredients and unique flavors, the gastronomy of the Neretva Valley wins over at the first bite.
